Goes over some of the issues women in particular can have with getting the bench press stronger.
Just read this article Matt and wondered is it incorrect form if you are not touching the bar to your chest? I guess I want to know if this is like the 1/4 squat. Is it considered incomplete or cheating if you do not lower the bar all the way to your chest?
Thanks for the tip on keeping the back tight. I might could have learned something.

Also, is there a suggested grip in particular or should we incorporating and alternating various grips (wide/narrow etc)?

Pretty much. You can use board presses and other partials to train it - I use a lot of 2-boards and floor presses cause of bum-ass shoulders - but doing invisible board presses just to avoid touching your chest is gym-faggotry.

Play around with it. I think most people are going to be strongest with a moderate grip somewhere around shoulder width. Too wide starts introducing shoulder fuckeditude, and too close gets into wrist-screwing and pure triceps dominance.
I tend to default to somewhere between a thumbs-from-smooth grip to an index-by-smooth grip.
Soooooo.... Shockingly enough I bench like a bodybuilder.
I know I used to bench with way too wide of a grip- and am also touching the bar way too high on my chest.
Matt, you said 'chest/ upper abdominals" so below tits then? Unless one has extremely saggy boobies, of course.
Good artice Matt. Thanks.
IPF rules say you can't belly-bench, but otherwise lower is better from a leverage standpoint.
Bodybuilders bench high on the chest cause they think it works the chest better. In response, I say

Nice article. Benching is probably one of my favorite exercises.

This is where I touch the bar. It ends up landing 1-2 finger width about the end of my sternum. (xyphoid process or something it's called?)
I think my grip is a little wider than most (I line up the crease of each thumb right where the bar changes from smooth to gnarled)but it's the most comfortable position I've found.
