Wow. That is sad.
I really believe that a meltdown in coming in the USA. For any citizen living outside the country, I recommend buying some real estate as quickly as you can. It's going to be difficult for the government to ask you to repatriate land and buildings, as opposed to any amount of paper money/other monetary instruments.

To be honest I'm strongly considering ditching my citizenship there once I'm eligible to get an NZ passport.

I've thought about it here...the only real drawback being that it would probably cause more hassle than it's worth for me to try to go places while claiming that I'm Japanese, hahaha.
